My Favourite Photos of 2011 – Part 2

Yildiz
Yildiz Hussein is an actress and a beautiful singer. She’s also very patient!
She had asked me to take some portraits for her over the summer, but things were so hectic I only managed to find time for the shoot in October. Hopefully, it was worth the wait….
Check out her MySpace page to hear for yourself what a stunning voice she has… www.myspace.com/yildizmusic

Kathleen Edwards
Yesterday I was back up in Manchester for the first night of Bon Iver‘s sold out UK tour.
I’m a big fan of Bon Iver but last night I was far more excited to see the lady playing before him, Miss Kathleen Edwards
I’ve been a huge fan of Kathleen’s music for years now. If you don’t believe me, check out my Last.fm profile for proof!
In Manchester I got to meet up with her in the afternoon and do an interview for the Birmingham Live blog. I then got to shoot the gig and then hang out with Kathleen and the boys, even popping out for Chinese food, before taking a few pictures, a few of which you can see right here.
Check out the video below too…
My interview with Kathleen can be found HERE

Guile – A Rock N Roll Band Shoot
You’ll no doubt remember the Rock N Riot Shoot we did recently with Kat from Rock N Roll Bride.
It was a brilliant day that I won’t forget.
For the shoot we put the word out on Twitter that we needed a band to act as extras. Local boys, Guile, kindly stepped up and were perfect for what we needed. In return, I offered to do a quick band portrait shoot for them and here are a few of the finished images…
Thanks again to the band for being so cool and helping us out.

Tony Iommi – Black Sabbath
Today I got to meet the legend that is Mr Tony Iommi, guitarist with the mighty Black Sabbath.
Actually, I have met him before.
I’ve been involved in the excellent Home Of Metal campaign and today Tony was in attendance at Birmingham Museum & Art Gallery to help launch the massive exhibition of metal memorabilia on display.
The exhibition includes a whole wall of my metal fan portraits. It also includes the largest print of one of my images ever! The crowd scene on the wall below was taken by myself at last year’s Download Festival.
If you get chance, check out the exhibition in Birmingham. It’s immense!

Maverick Sabre – A Portrait Shoot
If you haven’t heard of Maverick Sabre yet, I recommend you check out his performance on Jools Holland’s show below.
He’s got a truly unique voice and should be all set for his slice of stardom. He’s recently opened for Cee Lo Green, Plan B and tonight he’s supporting Snoop Dogg at the HMV Institute in Birmingham.
This afternoon I met up for Mav and took a few quick portraits. I had about 2 minutes with him!

The Chariot + MyChildren MyBride in Birmingham
In my life I’ve been to several hundred live gigs. The Chariot‘s gig in Birmingham would be in my top 10. Their album, Long Live, was one of my favourite albums of 2010.
Before the gig I met up with the band for a few quick portraits. They’re great guys. I also grabbed a portrait of support band, MyChildren MyBride.
The gig itself was immense, chaotic, frantic and totally exhilarating… Love that band!
If you’re not afraid of a little chaos and loud, noisy punk rock bands, check out this video from The Chariot’s Australian tour…

Action Replay – Band Photoshoot Competition Winners
Action Replay are a Birmingham based rock band who recently entered a competition run via Kerrang Radio and Brum Notes Magazine to win a photoshoot with yours truly.
You may have already worked out that they won the competition
The shoot in question took place as part of a Music Photography workshop which I held this weekend as part of the Home Of Metal campaign. The workshop ended with us taking the band out into a deserted high street in West Bromwich and over the course of just 30 minutes or so I tried to demonstrate to the people on the workshop how I aim to get a varied set of images in a short space of time. The fact that, on this occasion, we were restricted with our location as well as a boringly flat grey sky added a little more pressure to get something worthwhile, but I hope you’ll agree we did ok.
All these images were captured within a couple of hundred yards of each other during our 30 minute shoot. You can check out Action Replay’s MySpace page to hear their tunes. They’re also playing live regularly if you like what you hear.
Thanks to everyone who came to the workshop, the good people behind the Home Of Metal campaign and, of course, the band themselves who made my job easy.

Dolls Eye Weaver – Band Portraits
Dolls Eye Weaver are a local punk rock band whose influences range from Rancid and Social Distortion to Tom Petty and Bruce Springsteen.
They’ve been around in one form or another for a few years but have recently decided to take things a little more seriously so thought it was about time for some new band portraits.
The band’s frontman, Matt, emailed me about a week ago about setting up a shoot and we managed to schedule it in for bright & early Saturday morning. I always aim to get a good variety of images within a reasonably short space of time. All these photos were taken in around an hour.
I’m hoping to catch the band live when they play the Academy in a couple of months.
